The body of 19 year old Stephen Smith has been Exhumed 7 Years Later after new details emerged in the Alex Murdaugh's Murder Case.
The 19-year-old's death was called a hit-and-run for years until information in the Alex Murdaugh case changed everyone's tune.
Smith, was found dead on Sandy Run Road in Hampton County back in 2015. The original autopsy ruled the death as a possible hit-and-run.
Stephen had a gash in his head from either a bullet or some object, but no injuries below the torso -- something that would make no sense in a car accident.
Earlier in March, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) confirmed Smith's death is now being investigated as a homicide.
They reopened the investigation after finding evidence during the Murdaugh double-murder investigation in 2021.
Stephen's mom, Sandy Smith, has waged a campaign for years to reclassify the case, and now she has commissioned a private autopsy to determine what really happened to her son.
Many twists and turns in this case, including why Randy Murdaugh was so quick to offer help to the Smiths after Stephen's death, even before his body was officially identified.
The results of the second autopsy have not been made public.
